This study aims to analyze the impact of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) on anxiety and depression among Generation Z in Indonesia, with social media serving as an intermediary variable. Generation Z, who grew up in the digital age, are very familiar with social media and are prone to experiencing FoMO due to exposure to content that shows other people's perfect lives. This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design, involving 420 participants aged 16–25 who actively use social media. The research instruments consisted of the FoMO scale, the DASS-21 to evaluate anxiety and depression, and the Social Media Addiction Scale (SMAS) to measure the level of social media use. Data analysis was carried out through Pearson correlation tests and mediation analysis using model 4 from PROCESS Macro. The research findings showed that FoMO had a significant positive relationship with anxiety (r = 0.52; p < 0.001) and depression (r = 0.47; p < 0.001). In addition, intense social media use was shown to mediate the relationship between FoMO and anxiety and depression, where the indirect effect of FoMO on anxiety (effect = 0.18; 95% CI [0.12, and depression (effect = 0.15; 95% CI [0.09), as well as social media use was also significant. This study indicates that the higher the FoMO, the more likely an individual is to engage in excessive social media use, which ultimately increases the risk of anxiety and depression. The practical implications of this study are the need for intervention measures related to increasing digital literacy, training on mindful use of social media, and digital detox programs in educational and family contexts. This study provides an empirical contribution in understanding the dynamics of FoMO, social media use, and mental health among Generation Z. However, the limitations of the cross-sectional design mean that causal relationships cannot be firmly established, so longitudinal or interventional research is highly recommended for future research.
